My imaginings of Cascadia necessarily include #LandBack for the tribal communities. I'm curious if that has ever been a part of the conversations w folks who have been imagining the process of creating a separate state.
There definitely should be. Among bioregionalists there is genuine respect for the indigenous and a desire to become, as Winona La Duke counseled, “native to the place.” You and I, as members in good standing of the “thin green line,” know our movement has allied with native causes and respected native leadership. I think this discussion starts with meaningful consultation with native tribes on uses of the land and resources, and yes, some return of lands. The patchwork of white ownership on reservations that is a legacy of termination policies Is a place to start. Having covered the struggle of Colville tribal members against a mountaintop removal mining proposal in that time as a county beat reporter, I also know tribal ownership is not a silver bullet. I’ve begun to think about this a little bit, and you’ll see it in future posts.
